Understanding managed care organizations (MCOs)

If a workplace injury occurs, it's important to have the resources to provide care for your injured workers. As an employer, your managed care organization (MCO) helps you:

  • File and manage claims.
  • Ensure your injured workers receive the quality medical care they deserve.
  • Facilitate an employee's quick and safe return to work.

MCOs manage the medical portion of a workers' compensation claim.

Use the Employer/MCO look-up to find the assigned MCO for an employer.

MCO Report Card

We created the MCO Report Card (PDF) to make it easy to evaluate every MCO's performance. It measures key elements that lead to medical management quality, safe return-to-work strategies, and service timeliness.

Selecting an MCO

As an employer, you can choose the MCO that best suits your company's needs.

New employers

As a new employer, you must make a selection within 30 days of receiving your Certificate of Ohio Workers' Compensation (also called a Certificate of Coverage). If you have an OHID account, use the online MCO Selection Form. Or, you can use the printable MCO Selection form (PDF).

If a selection is not made, we may assign an MCO to you.

Existing employers

As an existing employer, you may change your MCO only during open enrollment. Usually, we have open enrollment every two years. The most recent open enrollment was held in May 2023. We produce the MCO selection guide (PDF) and the MCO Report Card (PDF) to explain your options and help you make the best choice for your employees.
