Workers’ compensation fraud occurs when someone knowingly makes a false representation of a material fact to obtain or to deny workers’ compensation benefits or to avoid responsibility under the law.  

Fraud can also occur when an employer misrepresents the amount of payroll or classification of its employees.  Medical providers can be charged with workers’ compensation fraud if they intentionally receive payments to which they were not entitled.

Workers’ compensation fraud increases premiums for employers, which reduces the money employers can invest in their employees, community and future growth. However, the lists below provide common “red flags” that can indicate workers’ compensation fraud is occurring.
