BWC's Division of Safety & Hygiene (DSH) provides a variety of programs, services and resources to help Ohio employers create a safe and healthy workplace. Our mission is to maintain a healthy, productive and competitive workforce in Ohio by preventing occupational accidents, injuries and illnesses. Businesses that have built safety and wellness into their workplace cultures reap many benefits, including fewer accidents, lower workers' compensation costs and more productive employees.

Your workers' compensation premiums cover the costs of the services, education programs and resources listed below. 

Safety consultations

These include safety and health consultation services as well as specialized consulting provided by the OSHA On-Site Consultation Program and the Public Employment Risk Reduction Program (PERRP). Services include consulting for industrial safety, construction safety, industrial hygiene and ergonomics.

Safety courses

We offer a variety of courses addressing industrial safety and hygiene, safety management, construction safety, ergonomics and risk management. Classroom and online courses are available. Classroom courses are delivered in 13 training sites around Ohio. 

Safety councils 

BWC provides a forum for occupational safety and health in local communities through the Ohio safety councils. Employers participate in monthly meetings on topics including, accident prevention, risk management, workers' compensation and health and wellness.

Ohio Safety Congress & Expo

The Ohio Safety Congress & Expo offers more than 180 educational sessions, 250 exhibitors and free continuing education credit.

Safety grants

We offer several types of safety grants including the Safety Intervention Grant Program, the Workplace Wellness Grant Program, the Drug-Free Safety Program Grant, the Firefighter Exposure to Environmental Elements Grant Program, the Employers Working with Persons with Developmental Disabilities Grant Program, the Ohio Law Enforcement Body Armor Grant Program and the School Safety and Security Grant Program.

Safety and video library 

The BWC library provides free informational services on the topics of occupational safety and health, workers' comp and rehabilitation. We provide the only such library in Ohio and one of the few in the nation. Aside from the books and videos, the library section of our website also contains safety newsletters, publications, guides and resources. Some of these include ergonomics resources, lifting guidelines, safety management resources guide, disaster and pandemic preparedness information, safety talks, school tools, industry-specific tools, safety-related links and the Ohio Administrative Codes related to safety. 

Research and statistics

Our research department focuses on protecting Ohio workers from workplace injury and illness, improving injury and illness prevention strategies and determining optimal allocation of resources to areas of greatest potential impact. Resources include data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), BWC's partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and our Ohio Occupational Safety and Health Research Program.

Safety Innovation Awards 

We established the Safety Innovation Awards to encourage and recognize innovative solutions that reduce the risk of workplace injuries and illnesses. Showcasing the most successful innovations inspires other Ohio employers to develop innovative solutions of their own.

DSH Fellowship Program

The objective of this program is to provide recent college graduates in the fields of occupational safety and health, engineering, industrial hygiene, and/or physical/natural sciences an opportunity to receive on-the-job training to build a professional career in the fields of occupational safety and health, ergonomics, industrial hygiene and risk management.

Better You, Better Ohio!TM

The Better You, Better Ohio!TM health and wellness program provides health and wellness resources and services to workers who work for small employers in high-risk industries.
