Bernard Silkowski

Bernie Silkowski was named Superintendent of the Division of Safety & Hygiene in September 2019 to lead the division in helping employers reduce the risk of workplace injuries and illness. This includes loss prevention consulting, education and training, the Ohio Safety Congress & Expo, safety councils, safety grants, research, and other outreach and wellness initiatives.

Bernie joined BWC in February 2015 after a 25-year career in the utility industry in New England and Ohio, where he provided safety services for a wide range of operations, construction, and support activities. In his role as BWC's Director of Technical Safety Services and Support, he led a team of experts in construction and industrial safety, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene that supports the division's safety and health consultants in the field.

Two years later, he became Director of Loss Prevention Operations, responsible for field operations, the OSHA On-Site Consultation Program, the Ohio Public Employment Risk Reduction Program (PERRP), and the Quality Assurance and Technical Support Unit. More than 100 safety and health professionals in this group provide workplace consultations, training, and other services directly to employers.

Bernie is a Certified Safety Professional, professional member of the American Society of Safety Professionals, and a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and a Master of Science degree in industrial engineering from the University of New Haven.
